    Interesting! I’m well aware that Davuluri is “too dark” for many Americans, but I didn’t think to expand that to a global context. For me there are a lot of associations between pageant culture and the ballet world, including the fascination with Eurocentric features. It may be a bit more overt in the former case (they are called “beauty” pageants, after all), but I remember my artistic director’s insistence on light skin and her dismay that her two half-Palestinian students were never as pale as the white girls.
